The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers staged a protest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA O.P. Sharma outside his residence here on Wednesday and demanded his resignation over the sexist remarks against Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba.
Several women volunteers of the AAP gathered outside Sharma’s residence holding placards in their hands and raised slogans against him demanding his resignation.
“Will insult to women continue in India like this? If a woman is outside her residence at night, will you highlight this? Do women have this existence in India? It’s been a long time that we have got independence, but when will women get independence to express their views?” asked one of the protestors.
She also took the opportunity to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I want to ask this question directly to Modi ji. Stay in India for sometime at least and witness as to how low your MLAs have stooped to. He is insulting a woman sitting in the Vidhan Sabha, the women of India will never tolerate this,” she added.
Another protestor said Sharma should be made to resign for his remark on Lamba.
“He should learn to respect women,” she added.
Sharma has been suspended from Delhi Assembly for two days for making derogatory remarks against AAP legislator Alka Lamba.
He had said, “Yeh raat bhar ghoomne wali hai (she roams around all night).”
Sharma was suspended till tomorrow by the Speaker, as AAP’s women legislators demanded his permanent suspension and an apology from BJP MLA and Opposition leader Vijendra Gupta.
He made the remarks during a discussion on homeless people and night shelters in the city, initiated through a calling attention motion by Vijender Gupta.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had expressed shock over the comments and hoped the BJP would take action against him.
