Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Bharuch, Congress in a statement has said that Gujaratis from every section of society are utterly bereft of happiness, unlike their fellow citizens elsewhere in the country. It added that the reason behind their anguish is ‘BJP’s post-2002 prototype of state-led development in which Gujaratis have been used as ‘guinea pigs’. The party has promised that if it is elected to power, it will put the Happiness Index in place as Gujarat’s launchpad that will work for everyone.

“While Mr Modi promises we will Make In India, the reality of the Gujarat Model is that he and five or six of his industrial beneficiaries are only interested in what they can Make Off India. This Make Money Off India campaign does not happiness make as it stymies GDP by 2% and hampers development,” Congress said it in its statement. The party added that BJP’s economic mismanagement is turning the country’s demographic dividend into a pressure cooker of frustrated prospects. It said that this is one of the reasons why India is one of the Made In China’s most loyal customers and our demand empowers Chinese jobseekers to obtain 50,000 jobs every day.

Even Rahul Gandhi had hit out at the Modi government yesterday by targeting it over a host of issues, including the GST, caste politics, alleged favouritism shown to corporate entities, and the Vibrant Gujarat summits.

He had also highlighted that setting up of Tata Nano automobile plant by the government as a parable of Gujarat’s miserable misadventure under BJP’s governance. Rahul said that land, electricity and water were parcelled off to Tata at throwaway prices, without regard to the community ownership of these resources and the acute scarcities faced by the average Gujarati.

Talking about the World Bank report on the ease of doing business, Rahul had said, “Yesterday Arun Jaitley- ji said some foreign institution has certified that India has considerably improved in the ease of doing business. The finance minister should meet small and mid-sized businessmen for 5-10 minutes and ask them if the situation has really improved. The entire country will shout and say that ease of doing business is absent, you have destroyed it, your demonetisation and GST have ruined it.”
