A 9-month-old infant died allegedly after being given polio drops in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, news agency ANI reported. The district administration has launched an investigation into the incident. Banda DM H Lal said strict action will be action against people responsible.

“It’s unfortunate, this is first the time such a thing has happened. I will constitute a committee to investigate the matter. Appropriate action will be taken against the guilty,” DM H Lal said.

The incident comes just after reports emerged that two infants had died and 32 were hospitalised in Hyderabad after they were administered wrong vaccine.

Another case was reported in Ludhiana in September 2017 when a toddler died only after an hour after he was administered polio drops which were given as part of the door-to-door drive conducted by the Angandwadi workers.

The parents of the baby were quoted by the news agencies that Anganwadi workers “woke up the sleeping child and forcefully gave the polio drops”. The baby’s condition deteriorated within half an hour after the drops and he was rushed to a hospital but did not survive.

In September 2018, panic had spread in many states after contaminated polio drops were administered to children during a drive. As per reports, poliovirus type 2 was discovered in some batches of oral polio vaccine made by a pharmaceutical company based in Ghaziabad.

The poliovirus type 2 strain has been eliminated from all over the world, including India, as per records.

The health ministry then had kept a watch over the situation and had directed the surveillance team in Uttar Pradesh to track all the children who were given the vaccine.

The head of the company that was providing polio vaccines for only government-run immunisation programmes, was arrested after the Central Drug Regulator registered an FIR in this case.
