5 killed, 8 injured in Kanpur cold storage explosion

An explosion a cold storage facility in Shivrajpur area of Kanpur killed at least five and injured eight others. Few people are also feared trapped in the debris as the explosion resulted in building collapse, a report by ‘The Indian Express’ has said. As per the report, a gas leakeage ia the reason behind the blast. Leakage started at the Katiyar Cold Storage earlier in the day, SP (Rural) Rajesh Kumar said. The NDRF and Army teams have been rushed to help fire brigade personnel in rescue operations.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Ramayan Prasad said the five injured labourers, who were rescued in the evening, were declared brought dead in the medical college-cum-hospital in the city. Eleven labourers have been rescued and those with minor injuries have been released for the hospital after treatment, he said. In the hospital, doctors have been put on alert as the number of those injured may increase, Prasad said. Kanpur District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma also said some labourers were having their lunch when the incident took place. More labourersmight still trapped inside the debris, district administration officials said.

He also said that rescue workers have been given protective gear. The administration will also check if the cold storage had a license.

In 2014, nearly fifteen people were killed and 12 injured after a pipeline of the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) exploded following a gas leak early on Friday near Nagaram village in East Godavari district, about 600 km from Hyderabad. People in the village said they had complained to the GAIL authorities about the leak but no action was taken to plug it.
