In a major embarrassment for Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, its former MLA Rakesh Singh has been arrested by Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF). Arms and ammunition have been recovered from him. Confirming his arrest, state police confirmed said it was working to track down down international illegal weapons.
“Ex MLA Rakesh Singh of Samajwadi Party was arrested with an illegal Taurus 9mm pistol. Questioning and investigation are underway,” said Additional Superintendent of Police STF Narayan Mishra, was quoted as saying by ANI. The Taurus pistol is believed to be priced between Rs. 4.5 lakh-5 lakh.
The STF team of the UP Police had raided the former MLA’s house from Charra in Mathura last night. In 2016, Singh was accused of threatening a builder. In the past, he has been accused of beating up a cop and vandalising government property, apart from intimidating a doctor.
Last month, three arms suppliers were arrested with six firearms including a US made Glock pistol, from Delhi’s Paschim Puri area. The crime branch nabbed Prateek Shaukeen (36), Waseem (28), and Lalit Kumar (43), after acting on a tip-off, DCP(Crime) Joy Tirkey had said, as per PTI.
While Waseem was reportedly carrying a 7.65 bore pistol with two live rounds, Lalit was carrying 7.65 bore pistol with two live rounds, he added. When their car was searched, more firearms were found in the boot, Tirkey added. As many as thirty-five live cartridges of 9 mm bore were also recovered from them in a bag from the car which belonged to Prateek.
