As many as 46 clerics have issued a fatwa against reality singing star Nahid Afreen who rose to fame through Indian Idol.
As many as 42 clerics have issued a fatwa against reality singing star Nahid Afreen who rose to fame through Indian Idol. The 16-year-old Afreen was the first runner-up in the singing show where she was scouted by Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha who later asked her to sing in the film ‘Akira’. The fatwa has been issued keeping in view an upcoming event that was to be held on March 25. The venue of the event is believed to near a mosque and a graveyard. According to the fatwa, ‘Sharia law’ doesn’t allow such musical nights to be organised and it has asked people to boycott Afreen’s singing programmes.
The fatwa has also asked the young singer from to stop performing in public. When Nahid got to know about the fatwa she was shocked and disappointed at the same time. While talking to the news agency ANI, she said, “I was shocked and broken from inside at first. But, many Muslim singers gave me inspiration to not quit music. I will never do so.”

The 16-year-old singer added that music is God’s gift to her and if it is not utilised properly, it is like ignoring God. “I think my music is God’s gift to me. I believe it must be properly utilised; not doing so is ignoring God,” she added.The police administration says that Nahid recently performed few songs that were against terror groups including IS. The Assam Chief Minister and union Law Minister have come out in support of Nahid.

According to the reports, letters were given to the people of Hozai and Nagaon villages of Assam on which the fatwa, as well as the names of people who released it, were written. Nahid made her Bollywood singing debut in 2015 with Murugadas’ film Akira that starred Sonakshi Sinha in the title role. This film was also the debut movie of director-producer Anurag Kashyap who played the role a corrupt police officer in the movie.
