AAP MLAs disqualification: Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP may suffer a big shock if elections are held in 2o seats that may fall vacant soon. The Election Commission of India on Friday recommended the disqualification of 20 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs for holding office of profit. The recommendation, which that has triggered a big row in the national capital, was sent to the President. In its recommendation sent to President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday morning, the Election Commission said the MLAs, by occupying the post of parliamentary secretaries between March 13, 2015 and September 8, 2016, held office of profit, and they were liable to be disqualified as legislators, PTI reported “highly-placed” sources as saying.

AAP leaders have condemned the EC opinion. They also moved the Delhi high court for an interim order to stay EC opinion. However, the high court refused to pass any interim order to protect the AAP MLAs from disqualification. The HC has now asked the poll panel to inform it by January 22 on whether a “final communication” has been sent to the President on disqualification of the MLAs. The HC bench headed by Justice Rekha Palli made it clear that she was not inclined to pass any order or issue notice. She has, however, asked the EC to clarify the queries raised by her. During the brief hearing, the judge also questioned the conduct of the AAP MLAs before the Election Commission. The court said the MLAs had appeared before the poll panel taking the shield of the fact that their pleas were pending in the high court.

If the EC recommendation is approved by President, the 20 seats will have to undergo polls within the next six months. Speculations are rife on whether AAP would manage to retain the seats. ABP news carried a quick survey today that predicted how the poll equations may change.

As per the survey, AAP will win just eight out of total 20 seats and lose the rest. The BJP will also win eight seats and Congress four.
