Gender parity should be included in family control measures, as most of the family planning programmes are women-centric, informed Union Health Minister JP Nadda, inaugurating a national workshop on ‘Jimmedari Nibhao, Plan Banao’ in New Delhi, on the occasion of World Population Day.

“Our focus area should be how to bring in a gender parity in population stabilisation and the male members of the society should come forward and participate, while the awareness can be brought in by heath ministry but the development partners NGOs should make necessary interventions, it should be a two-way process,” said the Minister.

Giving his inaugural speech at the one-day workshop organised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), in collaboration with Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh, Nadda stressed that a district-wise micro plan is necessary for population stabilisation.

“The workshop, which sees participation of NGOs and state government representatives, should focus on bringing in a special micro planning district wise with a realistic approach to bring down the total fertility rate (TFR), as it is the only step forward for population stabilisation,” the Minister informed.

The minister also indicated that the TFR was high at four per cent in 23 districts from the states of Uttar Pradesh (11), Bihar (8) Madhya Pradesh (2)and Rajasthan (2). Moreover, there are 123 districts from seven states with high TFRs which are between 3 to 3.9 per cent.

According to government data, TFR in India has seen a decline and stands at 2.3 per cent and 24 states have already achieved a TFR of around 2.1 level where the population stabilises.

“We have to improve TFR and strategise on left out states. We will try to take it up as a mission to identify the states where stabilisation has not taken place and special efforts would be taken,” informed the minister.
