Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar thriller ‘Wazir’ box office collections have risen to Rs 23.56 crore by day 4 in India alone (total gross approx. at Rs 33.66 cr). In a strong indication that the movie has received a fine word of mouth boost, the collections were rising steadily each passing day. But that was till Monday happened.
The Bejoy Nambiar directorial ‘Wazir’ box office collections were Rs 5.61 crore on first day and it managed some growth on day 2 by earning Rs 7.16 cr and finished the weekend with Rs 8.24 crore. The opening weekend collections add up to Rs 21.01 crore in the domestic market.
Wazir needed a big start to the week to make sure it builds up enough momentum into the rest of the week which would in turn ensure its survival in theatres. But that was not to be. On Monday, (Day 4) Wazir collections were a paltry Rs 2.55 crore, taking the India tally to Rs 23.56 cr.
Wazir may have been able to generate quite a bit of interest surrounding its rather dark story, but the movie was not promoted much in the run up to its release leading to most theatres not getting filled up and the result is plain to see at the B.O. – the multiplexes have seen good attendance though.
There is no big release until 22 January and among the previous releases it is only Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale and Deepika Padukone’s Bajirao Mastani that are giving competition to ‘Wazir’. Hence, the Big B and Farhan starrer has a clear advantage at the box office, in theory at least.
‘Wazir’ which also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham among others, tells the story of two unusual friends – a paralysed chess grandmaster (Amitabh) and a grief stricken ATS officer (Farhan).
