The film that features Samuthirakani, Dinesh Ravi, Anandhi and Aadukalam Murugadoss is a crime thriller and will be contesting for the Oscar Award in 2017 in the Foreign Language Film category. 1. ‘Visaranai’ is based on the novel ‘Lock Up’ by M Chandrakumar aka Auto Chandran (it is based on his personal experience) and is written and directed by Vetrimaaran and captures police brutality, corruption, injustice in their extreme forms.
2. ‘Visaranai’ is a national award winning movie. It received three honours at 63rd National Film Awards including best feature film in Tamil, best supporting actor for Samuthirakani and best editing for Kishore Te.
3. At the international level, the film won the Amnesty International Italia Award at the 72nd Venice Film Festival.
4. At the Oscars, ‘Visaranai’ is the 9th Tamil movie to represent India with the last one being Kamal Haasan’s ‘Hey Ram’ way back in 2000. Indian, Kurithipunal, Devar Magan, Jeans, Anjali, Nayagan, Deiva Magan were some of the others.
Among the films that failed to make it to the Oscars are Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh starrer Bajirao Mastani, Akshay Kumar’s Airlift, Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan, Shahid Kapoor’s Udta Punjab and Salman Khan’s Sultan.
