Every year, come Christmas time and we’re flooded with advertisements aimed at pulling at our heartstrings. This year, however, the hands-down winner isn’t from some well-known company, but an ad from Poland. The ad, which can be loosely translated to What are you looking for at Christmas? English For Beginners, features the struggles of an elderly Polish man determined to learn English. We start off the three-minute video with the gentleman ordering an English book for beginners. Day by day, he adds to his vocabulary – labeling every piece of furniture in his house with its English name.

Upon the man’s repetition of “I love you,” and “You are perfect,” you begin to wonder what his motive is. Is he going to reunite with a old lover who’s in England? Does he love a foreigner? What could make this man so determined to learn a new language at such an advanced age? The answer comes when he takes a flight to presumably the US or the UK and visits his son. When he enters his house, he sees his granddaughter and speaks to her in perfect English as a tear rolls down his cheek.


With families living in all corners of the world, sometimes different generations not even speaking the same language anymore, it is no wonder that this ad captured the imagination of millions. Shared in late November, the ad for a Polish auctioning website Allegra has since garnered over a million views. Unlike commercials, where branding is thrust into the viewer’s face, Allegra has kept its mention only once in the beginning of the video. This makes the impact of the man’s journey even stronger, as we’re not caught up with what the company has to offer, but get more invested in the crux of the matter – the old man’s preparations for the first meeting with his granddaughter.
