Tamasha box office collections: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone starrer’s take rises to Rs 75.86 cr on day 7Tamasha box office collections: Like Salman Khan’s PRDP, Tamasha collections were set for a big boost as the movie too enjoyed a solo run in theatres – the competition was against PRDP only, which was a fading star at the fag end of second week since its release. But the rivalry was in name only as the duel turned into a no contest with Tamasha unable to really get into its stride to reach the super-hit level. (Bollywood Hungama)

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone ‘chemistry’ powered Tamasha box office collections with India only earnings being Rs 10.87 crore on day 1 after logging near 40% occupancy rate. On day 2, signalling that it packs a heavier punch than many gave it credit for, Tamasha collections jumped over its day 1 figure to rake in as much as Rs 13.17 crore and took its domestic total to a commendable Rs 24.04 crore and a cumulative Rs 40.73 crore. On day 3, which was a Sunday, the film received its icing on the cake as the take increased the most since release at Rs 14.12 crore for a domestic total of Rs 38.23 crore (opening week). To that when we add the foreign amount, the total jumped to Rs 56.26 crore.

That was Sunday. Monday, day 4, however, was an entirely different story with the collections virtually collapsing to Rs 5.07 crore! This signalled that the word of mouth booster shot by those who had seen the movie was not good enough to lure their friends and kin to the theatres. In domestic market, this has taken the Tamasha collections to Rs 43.30 crore. With the international amount added, the total rose to Rs 65.70 crore – the sum is however, nothing to sneeze at and that is what made both Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor to celebrate their ‘success’ despite the plunging collections, according to reports. The inkling to Monday’s fall was already evident as low key advance bookings and mixed responses had suggested that Tamasha despite posting decent opening day box office collections figures would witness a drop in the take as the weekend ends – in short, it did not have the stamina to last the distance through the week.

In short, the Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor ‘chemistry’, which was quite talked up leading up to Tamasha release and did actually manage to lure the crowds initially to theatres, did not pack enough power and its ‘charm’ has quite worn off as the week draws to a close as far as the viewing public is concerned. On day 5 (Tuesday), Tamasha box office collections fell further to just Rs 4.07 crore, for a domestic take of Rs 47.37 crore and paired with the international take, the total rises to Rs 69.77 crore.

On day 6, which was Wednesday, the collections fell further to Rs 3.32 crore. Though Tamasha was well talked about in the weeks prior to its release, it actually did not manage to churn up the magic created by the leading pair Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor in their previous release Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

On day 7 the box office collections downgraded further to Rs 2.77 crore for a domestic sum of Rs 53.46 crore and an overall figure of Rs 75.86 crore. The collections picked up quite well over the weekends but the things changed over the weekdays as the movie witnessed huge downfall day by day. Though the movie slided down badly on the weekdays but Tamasha is sure a relief for Ranbir Kapoor after debacles like Roy and Bombay Velvet.

Overall, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor starrer Tamasha box office collections at the end were Rs 61.23 cr (lifetime) in India alone, while it also grossed approximately Rs 36 crore ($5.53 mn ) overseas.

Pertinently, in this season of hits, Tamasha was not able to compete at all with Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) box office collections, which had turned into a Rs 200 crore movie in terms of domestic collections (on 14th day). Before release, Tamasha was hyped up as a worthy opponent of the ‘Great’ Khan’s PRDP.

However, what was also clear is that, in the form of Tamasha, after a two week uninterrupted run at the box office, the Salman Khan starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) finally faced some sort of competition. And the Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer did make sure that PRDP story in theatres ended at the 2nd week itself.
