Udta Punjab has been a steady double figure accumulator over its initial run, collecting Rs 12.50 cr on Sunday for an opening weekend total of of Rs 33.80 cr. What is clear is that Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and others have received some good word-of-mouth boost to ensure there is a constant rising graph in the take over the first three days – Rs 10.05 cr, Rs 11.25 cr and finally Rs 12.80 cr. While the first day’s take was disappointing, only movies that get appreciation from the initial crowds in theatres manage to keep the amount in 2 figures.
While the title itself is catchy and the content is controversial, even if it seeks to just point out the prevelant reality in state of Punjab, and the cast is versatile and consists of established and rising stars, the filmmakers must have expected a lot more especially after the long-running row with Censor Board put it on every news and social media page in the country.
According to Bollywood Hungama, the gross Udta Punjab collections have risen to as high as Rs 52.72 cr. While this is significant growth, one should know that Udta Punjab was screened in just 2,000+ screens and that limited its reach across the country.
Having said that, they would also be counting their blessings that they actually got their movie to screen on time in one piece without effecting any major change that thr Censor Board had ordered in the beginning, courtesy the courts.
Now, all the Udta Punjab team would be wishing for is that it remains in the eye of the public through the duration of the week and well beyond that to ensure it enters the Rs 100 cr club. At the moment, the signs are positive, but it will not happen during its first week’s run.
