It is raining Sultan tickets this monsoon season. And the masses are lapping up each second of Salman Khan that is on offer! The effect is going to be quite telling on Sultan box office collections with Bollywood insiders saying as much as Rs 40 crore is going to be pulled in by the movie in the form of its opening day collection.
No mean feat, but no one is talking about Shahrukh Khan’s all-time record with Happy New Year which was released on Oct 24, 2014 and grossed as much as Rs 44.97 crore on its opening day which makes it the biggest movie Bollywood ever made. Most people are talking about Salman Khan beating his previous best and the No. 2 movie in the all-time record books which is Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP). It released on Nov 12, 2015 and pulled in as much as Rs 40.35 crore.
According to the insiders this wrestler romantic/sports/action-packed thriller will chalk up a Rs 40 crore figure in its opening day collection.
That this is the case despite Eid holiday being officially shifted from July 6 (Sultan release date) to July 7 is more proof of Salman Khan’s standing in the industry and amongst the masses. Having said that, if the Eid holiday had stayed put on July 6, then perhaps, Sultan would have challenged SRK’s record and even beaten it. But that is now all in the field of conjecture only.
Sultan success is stupendous. In fact, readers don’t even have to see what the analysts are saying, just check out the crowds at theatres and it will soon be clear how big a craze Salman Khan is and how eager the masses are to watch the film. The numbers therefore had to be mind-boggling too.
However, this has not stopped some people in the know from speculating an even bigger success for Salman Khan’s Sultan movie. In his reaction, Rajender Singh, Vice-President, Programming and Distribution, INOX Leisure Ltd said, “’Sultan’ has opened to full houses across INOX cinemas. Audiences are loving the film. Advance bookings for the weekend is extra-ordinary. Going by this trend, we expect ‘Sultan’ to create a new record for highest opening weekend and hopefully highest grossing film of all times”.
In his reaction about Sultan opening day collection Mumbai-based distributor Rajesh Thadani told IANS, “The opening (of ‘Sultan’) has been huge. I thought since Eid is on Thursday it will affect the collections, but the opening has been great. It was close to 90 per cent occupancy on Day 1 and now I feel the film will collect close to Rs 40 crore on its opening day.”
This is the massive figure that will be collected on a working day, and on Eid holiday (Thursday) an even more mammoth figure is likely to be bagged – Rs 50 cr is being whispered in the insiders’ club.
Sultan movie also stars Anushka Sharma and has been directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. Both Salman and Anushka are wrestlers in the movie that spans romance, emotion and violence/action.
Sultan opening day collection: Take the opinion poll, tell us what you really think about where Salman Khan movie is headed:
Devang Sampat, Director – Strategy Initiative, Cinepolis India said: “We had 25 per cent advance booking for ‘Sultan’ with almost 55,000 tickets sold on Tuesday itself. It is the highest advance booking for any movie and clearly shows the power of Salman. We understand that, and have allocated 80 per cent shows to ‘Sultan’ on Wednesday across our 252 screens and will follow the similar strategy for the long week. This will surely be the biggest blockbuster of the year till date.”
All that remains to see now that Sultan has reached critical mass, is what kind of records will Sultan rocket trough to. BTW, happy watching!
