Shashi Kapoor 81st Birth Anniversary: Rishi Kapoor wishes uncle with heartfelt family photos

He was a born star. Starting out as a child artiste, Shashi Kapoor went on to become a leading romantic hero of his time. As a producer, the late star of hits like Deewaar and Trishul showed a rare audacity as he bankrolled parallel cinema classics, putting money where his mouth was. Not to mention, theatre which remained his first love. Here's why Kapoor will always be more than just a good-looking Bollywood hero.

Rishi Kapoor, who has been undergoing treatment in New York for an undisclosed illness since September last year, took to Twitter to remember his uncle and legendary actor Shashi Kapoor on his 81st birth anniversary.

Rishi shared a picture with Shashi on his Twitter handle. Along with Shashi and Rishi, the picture also has Ranbir Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, and Rekha.

Rishi captioned the picture saying, “Happy Birthday Shashi Uncle!”


Rishi shared another photo from 2014 when Shashi received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He captioned the picture saying that what a proud moment for the Shashi Kapoor family! Dada Sahab Phalke award for him. Third Phalke Award in the family! Happy Birthday, uncle!

Shashi Kapoor acted in more than 150 films, including a dozen English language movies. He was known for playing romantic roles and charmed the audience with his good looks and acting skills. He was part of several evergreen films such as Deewar (1975), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Kabhi Kabhie (1976) and Namak Halaal (1982). His early life acting stint started with films like Meena (1944), Tadbir and Bachpan (1945).

Interestingly, Shashi Kapoor’s name was credited under the screen name of Shashi Raj Kapoor. But while growing up he dropped ‘Raj’ and kept only Shashi Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor got married to English actress Jennifer Kendal in July 1958. They acted in a number of films together like Junoon and Bombay Talkie. Shashi and Jennifer established Prithvi Theatre on 5 November 1978 in Mumbai.

Shashi Kapoor won several accolades in his career. The late actor received four National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards in his decades-long career. The actor was also honored with Padma Bhushan in the year 2011. He was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2014.

He died in 2017, at the age of 79, after a prolonged battle with liver cirrhosis.
