Sarbjit box office collections: Aishwarya Rai starrer’s opening weekend earning has been recorded at Rs 13.96 crore and this slots the movie into the 16th spot in the 2016 top grossers in Bollywood list. Clearly, much was expected from last Friday’s release, the Omung Kumar directed Sarbjit, which also features Randeep Hooda and Richa Chadha, but nothing spectacular happened despite having Aishwarya as the top draw.
The reason behind the about average performance of the movie are not difficult to find – after the fact, that is. From not impressing the critics to not having a gripping storyline, and even fewer ‘thrilling’ moments, the film did not manage to create the kind of hype that the theatre-going public looks for to convince them to go buy the tickets en masse.
Many movies have been able to jump over hurdles like these, especially if they have one thing going for them – word of mouth boost. However, Sarbjit does not seem to have received this in any large quantity as as evinvced by the fact that the collections did not jump during the weekend in a noteworthy manner.
Check out how Sarbjit fared at the B.O. during its initial 3-day run: Day 1 (Fri): Rs 3.69 cr; Day 2 (Sat): Rs 4.56 cr; Day 3 (Sun): Rs 5.71 cr; TOTAL: Rs 13.96 cr. Also, add to this sum the foreign collections and you get an overall amount of Rs 20.87 cr.
As far as the near future is concerned, there is no real competition in theatres right now for the Aishwarya Rai starrer. Currently, movies running in theatres include X-Men: Apocalypse (English) and the already week-old Emraan Hashmi starrer Azhar. Surely, these should not pose any serious challenge to Sarbjit and it may well keep on doing adequately well.
