The industry as such is on cloud 9 as 2016 has not been as successful a year as was predicted earlier with even some biggies getting short shrift from the public. However, we are not talking about failure here, we are celebrating success. And success at the moment is spelled like so – ‘S-u-l-t-a-n’.
While everyone and his uncle knew that Sultan box office collections would crack the Rs 100 crore problem, the bet that the aficionados were really excited about was how long it would take to reach this covetted mark.
Needless to say, with Aamir Khan, Shah Ruh Khan, and yes, Hrithik Roshan along with Salman Khan having already established their own personal and all-time best in this regard, Sultan too duly did what was expected. Things could have been even better for Sultan, but that was before Eid day was shifted from July 6th to 7th and that reduced the number of people going to theatres as it suddenly turned into a working day from a holiday.
A movie’s box office collections depend on a number of extraneous things – read startegy and how much influence a star and the filmmakers pack in the industry. So, while content is a nebulous item, the number of screens a movie is going to be shown in, the marketing strategy and spend are all part and parcel of a movie turning into a super-hit. Salman Khan of course packs one of the biggest punches on this score and Sultan success just goes to prove the point.
As far as the fastest films to cross the Rs 100 cr mark race is concerned, the record books were initially set on fire by Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express, which were followed by Hrithik Roshan’s Krissh 3 collections. Both the movies raced past the Rs 100 crore mark within 4 days.
The fastest films to reach the 100 cr mark after this was not by Salman Khan, but by Aamir Khan whose thriller movie Dhoom 3 managed to go past this milestone in a mind-boggling 3 days. But the solo occupancy of this sensational record was cut short soon enough by Shah Rukh Khan’s surprisingly successful movie Happy New Year and this was then followed by Salman Khan providing a different view of himself as Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Not just that, Salman Khan quickly followed with one-two punch when his Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) also smashed into this exclusive club in 3 days.
There were many others too in 2015 that entered the Rs 100 crore club but not in at the speed of light! They reached this mark at a much more sedentary pace. Among them, according to Bollywood Hungama, were Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale in 7 days and Deepika Padukone starrer Bajirao Mastani, which did so in 9 days.
In 2016, the first to make an entry into the Rs 100 cr club was Akshay Kumar starrer Housefull 3 in 13 days.

As can be seen, there is no one even near Salman Khan’s record 10 entries into the Rs 100 crore club. What is more, since it is still early days, Sultan has been in theatres for just 5 days, it is expected to script many more stories and perhaps records too.
