Rustom box office collections have been sensational over the last 4 days since release and what is clear is that superstar Akshay Kumar may well have another Rs 100 cr movie on his hands. The man has a Midas touch and this is uncanny. Almost every movie that has been released by him turns successful, even the ones which are a bit tacky and do not look to have too much substance in them, get near the 3-digit collection mark.
Rustom box office collections have raced from day 1 itself, despite facing a stiff fight from Mohenjo Daro, which also released on Friday and stars one of India’s more selleable stars in the form of Hrithik Roshan. It is also after quite a gap that Roshan has released a movie and it was expected to do very well indeed. But Akshay has nipped that particular possibility in the bud. While it is not a ‘no-contest’ it is very much clear that Rustom is way too ahead for Mohenjo Daro to ever catch it.
Take a look at Rustom box office collections. While on day 1 it was Rs 14.11 cr on day 4 it was Rs 17.81 cr. The overall India total of Rustom is Rs 68.23 cr by day 4. The holiday weekend is now over and there is bound to be a huge fall in the revenues of the movie as people go back to work and very few people manage to find their way to cinemas, at least in the morning and afternoon shows. The evening and night shows are not enough to ensure a massive surge in earnings simply because very few families and even fewer youngsters will be able to go to cinemas due to the various (understandable) restrictions imposed on them. But Rustom has a Rs 100 cr movie written all over it and it will get there, but the question now is whether it will be able to do so by the end of the first week?
For Rustom box office collections to jump over the Rs 100 cr mark in the first week will require a take in double digits over the rest of the week (Tuesday to Thursday). That is unlikely to materialise, no matter how good the movie, no matter who the superstar is – even Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have struggled, and in fact, found it mostly impossible. That means Rustom collections are not going to add up to Rs 100 cr in first week.
What will push Rustom into the Rs 100 cr club will be the second weekend boost Akshay Kumar starrer will receive. That will likely be near the Rs 10 cr mark and will also form the foundation to provide the necessary momentum for the movie to try for the Rs 150 crore mark and if fortune really smiles upon Akshay Kumar, even set it up for a Rs 200 cr status. Much of, course will depend on how Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro does. If it continues on the same trajectory as it is going, it will interfere with Rustom collections, but if it were to fall off the B.O. map, it will do Rustom a big favour.
