Priyanka Chopra can list UN Global Goodwill Ambassador among her many achievements. The actress was inducted into the position yesterday by fellow Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham on the occasion of the UNICEF’s 70th anniversary. The Dil Dhadakne Do star joins the ranks of Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway.
During her acceptance speech, Priyanka recalled her the beginning of her partnership with the UNICEF, saying, “My involvement with UNICEF ten years ago in India. Today I stand here humbled enriched, committed because of that exact experience. I want to thank the India team who has worked tirelessly with me for 10 years now for the amazing journey so far. And I want to thank the UNICEF for giving me this opportunity to extend the work that I can do.”
Thank you @davidbeckham and @milliebobby_brown for inducting me into the @UNICEF global family. Always delighted to meet likeminded people who believe that there is humanity left in us after all. And @milliebobby_brown you were a superb host tonight… congratulations on the #GoldenGlobes nod #foreverychild
The actress also talked about the need to protect mistreated and exploited children, adding, “Everyday fresh, horrifying images flash across our screens – a 10 year old girl dressed as a bride marrying a man twice her age, a boy sitting at the back on an ambulance trying to understand what just happened to him. A girl watching her brother go to school as she prepares for another day of housework. A boy’s lifeless body washing up on a beach far, far away from his home. People of the world, we ask you to join us today to become the collective voice of oppressed children across the world.”
She further gave a shout-out to the organisation, saying, “I want to take a moment to celebrate every minute of these 70 years where UNICEF has worked selflessly for every child. Today, we all stand here to renew that exact pledge. To every person involved in UNICEF, keep doing what you’re doing because the world is a better place because of what you.”
