Kesari: The Battle of Saragarhi

The story of the film is based on the ‘Battle of Saragarhi’ which was fought in 1897. With the British Empire conquering most of India, its eyes ere set on infiltrating the neighbouring Afghanistan. Fort Saragarhi situated in the North Western Frontier Province (NWFP) happens to be a small communication post used for the exchange of messages between two major military forts – Gullistan and Lockhardt. Distinguished with the color KESARI (Saffron), the Sikhs epitomises valor and pride and are ever-ready to die for their duty.

Havildar Ishar Singh played by Akshay Kumar, was a proud warrior who lived by his community rules, found himself in conflict with the orders of the British officers.

Ishar was sent to Saragarhi as a punishment where he finds 20 undisciplined Sikh soldiers. And it is this lot that Ishar leads into the battle when a 10,000-strong army of Afghani Pashtuns came raging at Saragarhi on 12th September 1897. Kesari is the story of the valour that those unrelenting 21 Sikhs showed fighting with 10,000 Afghans in the battlefield.
