Padmavati retitled Padmaavat box office collection Day 1: Following the Supreme Court’s order, the highly controversial film Padmaavat was released amid widespread protest in the country. The film has garnered a very mixed response from the audience. Under the protection of heavy security forces, people in metro cities have gone out to watch the movie which recorded 30 per cent occupancy rate. However, people in the South have shown more enthusiasm for the movie with a 60 per cent occupancy rate. “One section of the audience in metros is venturing out to watch the film amidst high security with a 30% occupancy, another section down south is flocking to theatres with a 60% occupancy rate, ” a report in Bollywood Hungama stated. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor is reportedly not being screened in the state like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
Experts believe that the film will find it tough to do good business if the protests continue in certain areas of the country. Despite the protests and pressures, the film has collected a fair amount of money in previews screenings on Wednesday. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh with extremely limited preview shows [which commenced in evening], Padmaavat has collected Rs 5 crore in previews screenings yesterday.
Meanwhile, the makers of the movie — Viacom 18 Motion Pictures on Thursday said that about one million people saw the film on its first day. A poll conducted by The Indian Express yesterday revealed that out of a given audience almost 73 per cent were interested in watching the movie, though many cinemas in various states have put up notices saying they will not be screening the movie.
Padmaavat’s lead actor Ranveer Singh yesterday said that he is proud to feature in a movie, the whole country can take pride in. Ranveer, who will be essaying the character of Alauddin Khilji in the period drama opposite Deepika Padukone, who plays Queen Padmavati, took to Twitter to thank the praise coming his way, and said he is overwhelmed by “Padmaavat”. Ranveer wrote, “I saw ‘Padmaavat’ in 3D last night. I am so overwhelmed with the film at this point that words fail me. I feel immensely blessed. I am so proud of my team. Team ‘Padmaavat’ for the win! High tens and monster hugs to everyone. I am relieved and happy to the reactions to my performance. Thank you all for your kind and generous praise.”
