Padmaavat box office collection: Sanjay Leela Bhansali helmed Padmaavat hit the screens officially today but the Karni Sena agitation against the film is the biggest hurdle in its way. It is estimated that Padmaavat could manage an occupancy rate of as much as 75 pct on the opening day which could garner Rs 35 cr approximately for the film on day 1. The film had been released in 4,800 screens across India. If speculation is anything to go by, then Padmaavat is likely to cross the opening day collection of Salman Khan starrer Tiger Zinda Hai which had collected Rs 34 cr on day 1. Padmaavat has received decent reviews from its critics and given the outrage over the Karni Sena protests the hype around the film has heightened to a great extent.
Based on the Sufi poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi Padmaavat is story about Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji who was reportedly obsessed with the beauty of the queen. Though Sanjay Leela Bhansali has tried hard and did his best to glorify the Rajputs, he missed out on making the film compelling and hard-hitting and down the line, you feel that the meat is lost somewhere. But despite the flaws in the narrative, Bhansali’s magnum opus is a treat. The critics who have watched the film are of the opinion that the film contains nothing that could hurt the Rajput sentiments and culture. The stellar cinematography, production design, costumes and camera work deserve special mention in the film.
Inspite of receiving a green signal from the Supreme Court, Padmaavat makers are having a hard time screening the film in many theatres. The protests have taken an ugly shape and things turned worse when a school bus carrying students was pelted with stones by a group of people protesting against the release of the film. If this continues, in the long run, this may prove to be fatal for its box office collection.
