Padmaavat box office collection day 1: Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh starrer Padmaavat, the year’s most controversial film opened to mixed response amidst the Karni Sena outrage across the country. Padmaavat found itself in the eye of Karni Sena glare because they were of the opinion that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film has distorted historical facts. The film certainly went through a lot before seeing the light of the day and despite of continued protests, the film witnessed a decent day 1 occupancy. While one section of the audience in metros is venturing out to watch the film amidst high security with a 30% occupancy, another section down South is flocking to theatres with a 60% occupancy rate. Despite of Supreme Court staying the ban on the film imposed by some states, the film is still not being screened in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat
According to reports, the film has garnered anything between Rs 15-20 cr on the first day. Had there been a smooth screening of the film, Padmaavat had the calibre of drawing more crowds as well as houseful shows.
Just to pacify the outrage, the Padmaavat makers gave in to the demands of the Karni Sena but to no effect. From changing its name from Padmavati to Padmaavat to covering Deepika’s midriff in the song Ghoomar, the makers of the film took the pain of doing it all. But the violence around the film shows no sign of pacifying anytime soon. Experts believe the film will find it tough to do good business if the protests continue in certain areas of the country. Despite the protests and pressures, the film has collected a fair amount of money in previews screenings on Wednesday. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh with extremely limited preview shows [which commenced in evening], Padmaavat has collected Rs 5 crore in previews screenings yesterday.
Though Padmaavat has no threat of competition from any other film at the Box Office for the next two weeks, the film will still find it difficult to earn money, given unending protests. After the film hit the theatres, Deepika Padukone shared her happiness, saying, ” I am extremely overwhelmed and emotional right now. I think this film has been through so much. To see that the film is finally releasing and to see the kind of reactions that the film is getting, reactions to my performance, it is extremely overwhelming.”
