Padmaavat, the 163-minute historical fiction movie about Alauddin Khilji, second emperor of the Khilji dynasty, is a perfectly framed film that is trampling every record that comes in its path. The film is continuing to weave magic at the box office even 9 days after its release on January 25. To quote the new record, Padmaavat on its ninth day at the box office minted Rs 16 crore to become the fifth highest grossing film on 9th day at the box office. Praise for the film doesn’t conclude there, the film with a business of Rs 16 crore on its ninth day has managed to surpass the ninth day earnings of the massive Salman Khan starrer film Tiger Zinda Hai (9th day collection stood at Rs 14.92 crore), that was released in 2017 – it is still going strong in cinemas across the country. For a film, that was embroiled in controversy for two months and was on the cusp of blanket ban across the nation facing protests from fringe groups for tainting the image and name of the Rajputs, Padmaavat has done extremely well at the box office.
The period drama has also defeated other previous releases like Krrish 3 (collected Rs 14.23 crore), Dhoom 3 (collected Rs 12.04 crore) in terms of its 9th day grossing. Padmaavat is only behind last year’s biggest blockbuster Prabhas starrer Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (collected Rs 26.5 crore), Aamir starrer Dangal (Rs 23.07 crore), Salman starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 19.25 crore) and again Aamir starrer PK (collected Rs 17.16 crore).
Padmaavat has also proven to be director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ranveer Singh’s biggest grossing film till date. Collections reported at Rs 192.50 crore till Saturday, the film has the capability to surpass many more records, one of them being Deepika Padukone’s personal highest grossing film. Chennai Express still remains the Padmaavat actress’ highest grosser with Rs 227.13 crore.
