Mohanlal pays homage to Girish Karnad, says his demise a big loss to film fraternity

In a Malayalam movie titled 'The Prince', the two iconic actors - Girish Karnad and Mohanlal had shared screen space together. The film had been a box office hit and Girish Karnad, a favourite among Malayalis, marked his appearance with Malayalam cinema's super star - Mohanlal.

The demise of Jnanapith awardee, noted playwright and veteran actor Girish Karnad has seen tributes continuing to pour in. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Ram Nath Kovind and many others from the fields of politics, literature, art and theater have shared their emotional tributes to Girish Karnad. The latest is Malayalam super star Mohanlal who has posted, “A big loss to the film fraternity , Girish Karnad, you will always be remembered.”

In his tribute to Girish Karnad, Anil Kapoor tweeted, “I met Girish Karnad way back when he was the principal of the film institute and then worked with him in Pukar. He was a great man and playwright. His stories will forever remain in our hearts and minds. Sending my prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family.”

That the two actors shared a warm friendship is clear from the tweet that Mohanlal has paid in his tribute to Girish Karnad.

A visibly emotional tweet came from Shabana Azmi who conveyed as follows, “Deeply saddened to learn about Girish Karnad. Haven’t yet been able to speak with his family. It’s been a friendship of 43 years and I need the privacy to mourn him.I request the media to kindly excuse me from giving quotes.”

Notably, another emotional post on Twitter was from Prakash Raj who had tweeted that, “Will miss you but cherish you for life.” He had also tweeted that every moment they had been together is ‘ALIVE’.

As a mark of respect, Karnataka has declared Monday as a public holiday for all government schools, offices and colleges due to the demise of the veteran playwright-actor, Girish Karnad.

A press statement from Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also states that the iconic playwright will be cremated with full state honours. In addition, there will be three days of mourning, in accordance with the steps taken by the state government when Jnanpith award winners have passed away.
