In a stunning revelation, eight people who currently work on Netflix’s show “House of Cards” or have worked in the past, have accused Kevin Spacey of turning the set into a toxic work environment through a pattern of sexual harassment. One former employee even told CNN that Spacey sexually assaulted him during one of the show’s early seasons. Describing that incident, this former production assistant said that Spacey sexually assaulted him one afternoon when the assistant was assigned to drive to an offsite location to pick up Spacey and bring him to the “House of Cards” set, which is located about 30 miles outside of Baltimore. According to the report, the production assistant did not report the incident to any managers of the series or the police, but he did tell a co-worker at the time.
All these people have talked to CNN on the condition of anonymity for fear of professional repercussions for speaking out, described Spacey’s behaviour as predatory, saying ‘it included nonconsensual touching and crude comments and targeted production staffers who were typically young and male’.
This development comes just one week after actor Anthony Rapp had told BuzzFeed News that Spacey had made sexual advances toward him in 1985, when Rapp was 14 years old. Reacting to this, Spacey had apologised to Rapp by saying, “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
On Wednesday, Kevin Spacey’s publicist Staci Wolf in a statement said that the actor is seeking unspecified treatment following Rapp’s allegations. However, on Thursday, Wolf revealed that she, and Creative Artists Agency were parting ways with the actor. Later, Netflix shut down the production of season 6 of House of Cards.
These allegations have also come at a time when Hollywood was rocked with the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal. Dozens of women including top actresses like Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow have accused the producer of sexual harassment and police are investigating assault claims. Weinstein has apologized for his behaviour, but denies all allegations of nonconsensual sex.
