Kahaani 2 has had an underwhelming performance at the box office so far (Rs 19 cr till Monday in domestic market), but the more pressing question is whether Vidya Balan’s star can escape the repercussions of the film’s disappointment? When Kahaani came out in 2012, no one expected it to be a hit, but it surpassed all expectations and remains one of Vidya’s finest performances. Fast forward to four years later and Kahaani 2 has people wondering, ‘Is the actress stagnating with mediocre films?’
Couldn’t outdo the original Kahaani: Even though Kahaani 2 has outperformed the original film (Kahaani opened to Rs 3 crore on day 1, while Kahaani 2 earned Rs 4 crore), these margins are not very large. Plus, given that Kahaani 2 had the franchise factor going for it and an existing fan base from 2012, it could have performed much better. The general verdict is that the original film is still the best in the series.
String of mediocre films: Vidya’s last successful film was the 2012 thriller. Since then, she came in a string of box office duds like Humari Adhuri Kahani, Ghanchakkar and Bobby Jasoos. While the name Vidya Balan was a force to contend with in her Parineeta and Bhool Bhulaiyya days, her latest choice of films have left audiences more cautious and Kahaani 2 seems to have sealed that opinion.
Women-oriented films: While the film industry is changing with women-centric films like Dear Zindagi becoming hits, female stars still have to gamble when carrying a film on their shoulders without a strong male lead. Sometimes this gamble worked for Vidya like in the case of No One Killed Jessica, but recently, it hasn’t.
Will Vidya be able to bounce back after Kahaani 2? In a recent interview with India Today, the actress said, “ I obviously want each and every film of mine to do extremely well. That goes without saying. But I am also not looking at Kahaani 2 as a saviour. As far as I am concerned, nothing has changed. I still choose my roles the way I did earlier.”
