Producers of cult western drama “Deadwood” are exploring options to adapt the axed TV series for the big screen.

The Emmy Award-winning show, created by David Milch, starred Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane in the lawless town of Deadwood, South Dakota in the 1870s. It ran for three seasons until it was scrapped in 2006, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Garret Dillahunt, who played geologist Francis Wolcott, recently sparked rumours of a revival in a series of Twitter posts, writing, “So uh… I’m hearing credible rumours about a #Deadwood movie. #Everybodypray.”

He also lobbied network executives at HBO for a film to offer deserving fans “some closure”.

Now, HBO bosses have addressed the claims, confirming they are contemplating revisiting “Deadwood”, but insisting nothing has been decided.

“In reference to Garret Dillahunt’s tweet regarding the rumoured Deadwood movie, there have only been very preliminary conversations,” a statement said.
