Chef movie review: Saif Ali Khan starrer Chef is indeed a bold step which dares to venture onto a path less trodden. If you have already seen the Hollywood hit from which the movie has been officially adapted, you will surely have a set expectation from this movie. Now the question is whether Raja Krishna Menon’s directorial could match up to Jon Favreau blockbuster Chef? The answer is – in parts. Saif Ali Khan as the Michelin star chef Roshan Kalra is impressive and you will like that fun and humble appeal which his character offers. The movie showcases the bond between the father and son, played by Mumbai boy Svar Kamble. Its a ‘good looking’ film with a strong supporting cast but the smoothness of this feel good film is spoiled by a predictable plot.

Chef had everything that viewers could have asked for, a strong lead, a phenomenal supporting cast and a good plot. But it somehow dwindles down and fails to be impactful. If you throng the theatres expecting a delicious concoction, you will be disappointed to have been served a tasteless platter. Even the title of the movie does not live up to what happens on screen because the way the food is displayed is rather disappointing. What could have been a visual treat for the audience ends up being a bland affair on screen. The characters could have added much more to the promising plot and the screenplay could have enhanced the outcome.

But the film has its share of impact in a few scenes. What should not be missed is the performance given by the supporting cast which includes the likes of Padmapriya Janakiraman, Dhanish Karthik, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Milind Soman. Saif Ali Khan does what he supposed to- effortlessly sport the character of a chef who is yet to discover what he actually wants from life. The film could have been a stunning brew of emotions, culinary goodness and a visual delight but nevertheless its food platter served hot with not much spice to it!
