The year 2014 was a year in which we saw multiple new box office collections records being created, only to be broken by the following releases, specially Aamir Khan-starrer ‘PK’. In this report, we analyse the top grossing movies of 2014.
Interestingly though, while the data is pretty much self-explanatory, one fact that stands out is that the ‘PK’, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, has managed to beat all competition to become the top grosser in almost all territories globally. The sole territory that features the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Happy New Year’ as the Highest Grosser is Malaysia, incidentally a country which has a huge SRK fan following.
Worldwide*, Aamir Khan’s ‘PK’ has surpassed everyone’s expectations to generate a humongous Rs 615 crore, while Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ comes in second place with Rs 402 crore (still way below 2013-released ‘Dhoom 3’), followed by Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ with Rs 394 crore.
In the domestic market, ‘PK’ grabbed all the attention with its box office collections reaching Rs 320.48 crore, which is set to rise with the movie still running in the cinema halls. Salman Khan did a good job with ‘Kick’ (July 2014) by collecting Rs 231.85 crore to become the year’s best just to be taken over by ‘PK’ in 2014-end. The much-awaited ‘Happy New Year’, which was expected to beat at least ‘Chennai Express’ figures after the best ever opening for a Bollywood film, just managed to enter the Rs 200 crore club, collecting Rs 203 crore.
* Worldwide collections are gross figures and approximate. For ‘Happy New Year’, Tamil and Telugu versions are included as well.
