Befikre box office collections day 4: The romantic flick starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor has made Rs 5.2 crore on day 4 (Monday). This makes Befikre’s total earnings so far Rs 39.63 crore and it is spot on to achieve the Rs 50 cr mark. The film was made on a budget of Rs 70 crore, so it has only touched the halfway mark on the road to break even. On its first day, the film opened to Rs 10.36 crore and saw an occupancy rate of 55% in theatres. Saturday and Sunday saw higher footfall for the film and it raked in Rs 11.60 crore and Rs 12.47 crore respectively.

Given its current performance, Befikre would have to keep up a steady performance now if it is to break even by its second weekend. With minimal competition with the release of Wajah Ho Tum, this might just be possible, but it looks like even news of Ranveer’s bare butt couldn’t bring in the viewers required to make the film a true box office hit. Even so, the film has not done badly compared to the other releases this year. According to Bollywood Hungama, it holds the record of having the 10th highest grossing box office opening this year – although this record will probably be readjusted once Aamir Khan’s Dangal dominates the box office on December 23.

While Ranveer and Vaani’s film hasn’t done badly at the box office (especially when you consider demonetisation), the hype surrounding the movie – be it for the posters featuring lip locks, Ranveer’s full monty or the censor board allowing it – all seems excessive in hindsight. The film has received mixed reviews from both fans and critics. Although it promised to be a new-age romcom for millennials, it doesn’t seem like it has even come close to redefining the romantic genre for Indian cinema. Aditya Chopra’s direction particularly has received flak with the general consensus saying he stick to doing what he does best aka DDLJ-esque movies.
