On his 74th birthday, superstar Amitabh Bachchan addressed the media and accepted the wishes of the gathered people there. Expressing his happiness at the gathering, Amitabh indicated that he was happy to be in front of the journos as they brightened his day. Bachchan said, “I take this opportunity to thank everyone.”

However, Bachchan took umbrage at a journo asking him questions about India and Pakistan relations in the wake of the surgical strikes and Pakistan artists controversy that was thereafter generated by some political parties and industry veterans asking that these actors must condemn the terror attack in India or else leave the country – both Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena started this and the media and the industry took it up. Bachchan agitatedly told the mediaman that this is not the occasion to ask such questions. The day is auspicious as it is Dussehra and it was also his birthday. Bachchan said, “This is not the time, and I don’t think its right to put forward such questions.”

However, then he proceeded to say, “People of this country are very angry by the incidents that have been happening at our borders, its time to show solidarity.”

He added, “Its time to show solidarity towards our jawans & armed forces who are sacrificing their lives so that you & me can be safe.”

Bachchan wwas also asked to respond to senior BJP leader and Bollywood veteran Shatrughan Sinha pitching his name as President, but Bachchan shrugged it off saying, “Shatrughan babu mazaak karte hain, unka bachpana hai. Aisa hoga nahin.”

As for the future, Bachchan said, “I only wish to continue working and take up challenging roles in future as well.”

Another question that disturbed Bachchan was on having a cake. Bachchan begged to differ, taking a very traditionalist stance saying, “Cake ki pratha humne band karwaane ko kaha hai. Kyunki mujhe pata nahin ye cake kyun laaya jata hai? Mombatti kyun lagayi jaati hai? Jaalane ke baad kehte hain ise phoonk ke bujha do, fir ek bada sa katlnuma chaaku aajata hai.”

And most tellingly, he railed against teh new habits that youths have picked up. Bachchan said, “Aajkal ek nayi pratha shuru hui hai, jab sab kaaand hojata hai tab ek aur kaand hota hai..cake leke poth dete hain mooh pe.”

When questioned about Hema Malini’s birthday, which falls on October 16, Bachchan said, “There are many birthdays in the month of October, I wish them all a happy b’day.”

On the fact that he was working with one of the most highly rated stars in Bollywood in the film Thug, Bachchan said, “Aamir Khan is a great star & has been ruling box office & industry for years, great opportunity to work with him.”

Amitabh Bachchan ended the conversation with a a take on Bollywood and its future well-being saying, “Film industry ‘chirayu’ (eternal) hai, humesha chalti rahegi.”
