In what resembles a yo-yo ride, Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift box office collections dropped massively to Rs 5 crore on day 7 (Thursday) and Rs 6 cr on day 6 (Wednesday), which was a precipitous fall from the highs it reached on Republic Day. As such, on Thursday Airlift managed a total (net) in India of Rs 83.50 crore, while the tally (gross approx.) here is Rs 119.29 crore. When to this sum is added the foreign take, the amount increases to Rs 138.15 crore.
While Airlift collections are massive indeed, they are still quite short of the Rs 100 crore mark within India, which would really put the film at a superlative level.
Just two days earlier, in a sensational turn, Airlift collections soared a massive Rs 17.80 crore on day 5, which was the Republic Day. This surge reflects the patriotic fervour in the public, which made a beeline for theatres to watch the film based on a true event that fills Indians with pride – the film shows how the Indian government evacuated 1,70,000 people of Indian origin and also of other nationalities through 488 flights during the Iraq-Kuwait war, which is the largest human evacuation in recent history.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Wednesday, ‘Airlift’, which released on January 22, has collected Rs 72.50 crore till now. He added, “#Airlift is sensational on Tuesday. Crosses Rs.70 crore. Should easily surpass Akshay’s highest *Week 1* biz – #RowdyRathore Rs.79.52 crore.” Overall, by day 5, Airlift box office collections with foreign take added are Rs 122.43 cr.
He added, “#Airlift Friday Rs.12.35 crore, Saturday Rs.14.60 crore, Sunday Rs.17.35 crore, Monday Rs.10.40 crore, Tuesday Rs.17.80 crore. Total: Rs.72.50 crore. India biz. Speeding towards Rs.100 crore. Fab,” Adarsh added.
Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift box office collections during the opening weekend were as high as Rs 67.15 crore gross (by day 3 – Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Thereafter, as soon as the working week began, they plummeted to as low as Rs 10.40 crore – day 4 (Monday). This had taken Airlift tally in India to Rs 54.70 crore. While Airlift’s nett tally (gross approx.) rose to Rs 78.14 crore, with the foreign take added the overall total for the period was Rs 97 crore. This in effect has made it the best movie of 2016 so far. Of course, the year has just started and a number of major releases are set to hit theatres all through it.
Tellingly, Airlift has been strategically released to coincide with the patriotic fervour that goes with the Republic Day on 26th January and highlights the role of a gallant unsung hero (essayed by Akshay Kumar).
Airlift, which also stars Nimrat Kaur had been highly anticipated and it received great reviews and wowed the audience and this has in turn led to word of mouth booster for the film. All these factors have come together to ensure that Airlift does massively well at the box office. Airlift box office collections on day 1 of Rs 12.35 crore made the movie Akshay Kumar’s 8th best grosser.
The great part for Airlift and Akshay Kumar was that while Monday was a working day, it was followed by the Republic Day holiday on Tuesday when the patriotic fervour was at its highest, what with military parades and fly-past in Delhi and other state capitals serving to raise such feelings to a climax. In fact, the film, in the days leading up to Republic Day, did good business due to this factor and is likely to continue doing so well into the next weekend.
Needless to say, whatever project Akshay Kumar seems to touch it ends up as an unqualified success and Airlift is well on its way to cement his reputation as a megastar.
Airlift has also received massive backing from Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan, Anupam Kher, Abhishek Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Karan Johar, Shabana Azmi, and others.
