In the aftermath of 2017 state assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party confirmed Trivendra Singh Rawat as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on Friday evening. Even though he was always the front-runner for the job, the news was confirmed after the party MLAs met to take the final decision. He took oath on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm along with his council of ministers in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah. So, who is Trivendra Singh Rawat? What made his the ideal choice for the CM post? Let’s have a look at his journey:

– Rawat started his political career as a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh which he was a part of, between 1983 to 2002. He was elevated to the post of organising secretary of the Uttarakhand region and later held the same position for Uttarkhand the state, after its formation in 2000.

– He made the headlines for the first time by winning state’s first legislative assembly elections in 2002 from Doiwala constituency. The 56-year-old Rawat retained his seat in 2007 state elections and served as the Minister of Agriculture till 2012.

– His brilliance in the state got the attention of Amit Shah after which Rawat was roped in to work closely with the BJP President for the 2014 Lok Sabha. As it turned out, BJP emerged victorious and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of the country.

– His relations with Amit Shah strengthened and Rawat was made the chief of BJP’s Jharkhand unit. A post-graduate in History with a diploma in journalism, Rawat has no criminal cases against him and holds assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

-However, he was involved in a controversy when a defamation suit was filed against him in the ‘seed scam’. Rawat claimed that an investigation initiated by the Congress government had failed to prove him guilty.

BJP won 56 out of 70 seats in the state dethroning Harish Rawat’s Congress government. The party has already formed the government in Manipur and Goa by forming post-poll alliances despite not getting a clear mandate. In Goa Manohar Parrikar was named the Chief Minister while N Biren Singh formed the first BJP-led government in Manipur.
