Yogi Adityanath is the designate Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. This has sprung a huge surprise on the people who were expecting either Manoj Sinha or Rajnath Singh to be designated as the chief ministers of the largest state of the country. This appointment seems like a mismatch to the developmental agenda of Modi. Remember PM Modi’s rhetoric “Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas” during his campaigning. A cross-caste, cross-class coalition voted in the BJP on the promise of parivartan and a “new India“. But now with Yogi Adityanath’s appointment the strong message going out is that Hindutva has triumphed over development.
Even though, BJP leadership reposes full faith in him as reflected in the statement of Sudhanshu Trivedi, that, ” It’ll be a new era of development with PM’s vision & Yogi’s action blah blah blah, the fact is with Yogi as the chief minister it may well lead to dilution of developmental claims as made by BJP during the election campaign.

The ground reality is that Yogi Adityanath has been chosen for Hindu consolidation ahead of 2019 polls around populist nationalism. He is a powerful advocate of Hindutva and a great influencer. But he has no experience in administration and therefore pretty much a novice. He has a reputation of stirring hornet’s nest around icons such as Mother Teresa, Shah Rukh Khan etc, something that reflects the way he thinks. His boldness and his position as the Mahant of Gorakhnath math can also send polarising signals to the other important community of UP, the muslims. Against this background, will he be able to deliver as chief minister is a big question. This is certainly defiance of conventional politics on the part of BJP top brass.
However, he has a tough image that could help in tackling the law and order situation in UP. More importanly, his choice of two deputy CMs is an excellent one as between the three of them they can carry out the BJP agenda for UP that includes, Hindu consolidation, development and law and order. while Keshav Prasad Maurya is expected to strengthen party structure and take care of law and order, Dinesh Sharma will likely take charge of economic development. Moreover, Yogi Adityanath is an honest man
