The second out of seven-phased Assembly elections in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh witnessed a 66 per cent voter turnout, surpassing the first phase that saw 64 per cent. Fate of 721 candidates are in the fray as western region of the state underwent polling during the second phase in 11 districts of this region. Amid high security arrangements, voting took place in places like Saharanpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Bareilly, Amroha, Pilibhit, Kheri, Shahjahanpur and Badaun. Over the past few months UP has witnessed high-decibel campaigns by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, former CM Mayawati and the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. In this triangular battle, BJP, SP and BSP all are eying at the throne. The stakes in this elections are highest for the ruling SP, as the party did tremendously well during the 2012 Assembly polls. The incumbent CM Akhilesh along with his political partner Rahul Gandhi has been consistently blaming PM Modi for befooling people in the name of ‘achhe din’ and demonetisation. PM Modi, too, had been critical about Akhilesh and had recently called the state government as anti-farmer. PM had said that Centre allot funds, but why is it that farmers in the state are not benefited.

Many experts believe that a large chunk of Muslim votes between SP-Congress alliance and BSP could benefit BJP in the ongoing elections in the country’s most populous state.
