The politically crucial Uttar Pradesh has so far witnessed two out of the seven-phased Assembly elections. Fate of 270 candidates are in fray and the western region of the state underwent polling during the second phase in 11 districts of this region. Amid high security arrangements, voting for the second phase happened in places like Saharanpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Bareilly, Amroha, Pilibhit, Kheri, Shahjahanpur and Badaun. Over the months, UP has witnessed high-decibel campaigns by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, former CM Mayawati and the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. The ongoing polls will surely be a litmus test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government as the Central party complete almost 3 years of regime. The incumbent CM Akhilesh Yadav-led SP has put everything on stake to retain the power. During the 2012 Assembly polls, SP bagged 34 seats out of the 67 constituencies of the western UP. Akhilesh along with his political ally Rahul Gandhi has been consistently blaming PM Modi of befooling people in the name of ‘achhe din’. SP is largely banking upon development agenda with CM’s ‘Kaam Bolta Hai’ campaign, but PM Modi, too, had been critical about Akhilesh and had recently called the state government as anti-farmer. PM had said that Centre allot funds but why is it that farmers in the state are not benefited.
