As the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh is undergoing its seven-phased Assembly elections, voting for first and second phased witnessed a decent voter turnaround. After the second phase, fate of 721 candidates from 92 political parties are in the fray as the western region of the state went for polling in 11 districts including Saharanpur, Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal, Rampur, Bareilly, Amroha, Pilibhit, Kheri, Shahjahanpur and Badaun. Over the past few months, UP has witnessed high-decibel campaigns by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, former UP CM Mayawati and the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. In this triangular battle, BJP, SP and Bahujan Samaj Party all are eying at the throne. As the elections have now reached a crucial stage, stakes are highest for the ruling SP. The ruling party did tremendously well during the 2012 Assembly polls. The incumbent CM Akhilesh along with his political partner Rahul Gandhi has been consistently blaming PM Modi for hindering the development work in the state. On the other hand, PM Modi has been critical about Akhilesh and has recently called the state government as anti-farmer. PM had said that Centre allot funds, but why is it that farmers in the state are not benefited.

Many experts believe that a large chunk of Muslim votes between SP-Congress alliance and BSP could benefit BJP in the ongoing elections in the country’s most populous state. With such high voter turnout, it clearly indicates that the electorate is turning out to vote to effect a major change. However, looking at the crowd in rallies of these parties, it is very difficult to say as to who would be at the receiving end of the voters.
