In yet another veiled assault on Narendra Modi, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MP Shatrughan Sinha targetted the massive campaigning drive by the prime minister during the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections ahead of the final phase of voting there. Taking jibes at party campaigners and their actions to woo voters, Sinha asked if the party has “confidence (in) star campaigners and jalebi-eating leaders” then why does it need to create such a big show. A vocal critic of PM Modi, Sinha also take a shot at the poll campaigning strategy of the party in a series of tweets earlier in the day. He started off by calling BJP leaders names like “star campaigners who few recognize”, and added that “Jalebi eating time pass people with little relevance or impact” are unlikely to affect results. These reactions of Sinha came at the time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding massive roadshows in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi, which is going for voting on March 8. The PM is on a three-day trip to Varanasi starting from Saturday.

While the PM was busy in convincing the voters of Varanasi to vote for BJP, Sinha called it a “desperate” action. Asked about PM Modi’s campaign, he said, “Ye kisi kisam ki desperation ka bhi sanket deta hai. Ye kaisa desperation hai?” (It gives insight into some kind of desperation. What kind of desperation is this?). The leader asked, “Agar aap confident hain, aapke paas star campaigners hain, jalebi khane wale leaders hain to taam-jhaam ka kya matlab hai?” (If you are confident, have star campaigners, leaders who eat jalebis, then what is the need of this hullabaloo?).

Earlier, on the day, Sinha made a series of cryptic tweets in relation to UP assembly polls. Targeting the campaigners, Sinha wrote, “Star power, Stars’ Power, Solo Marches, Massive crowds, attendant security concerns, Multi starrers’ marches with great fanfare…so called star campaigners who few recognize.” Without taking any name, he also took a swipe on the BJP leaders who a few days ago relished local delicacies of Varanasi by writing “Jalebi eating time pass people with little relevance or impact”. However, at the end of the tweets, he wished and prayed that good sense prevails upon the people and they vote for best people and a progressive government.

Sinha had earlier expressed his disappointment over not being included in the party’s list of star campaigners for the crucial UP election.

PM Modi has drawn massive crowds during his roadshows through the streets of Varanasi to ensure BJP candidates win in the Assembly elections. The crowds drawn are even greater than the ones he got when he was campaigning here during the general elections in 2014.
