UP elections, 2nd phase: Mayawati’s BSP tops millionaire, criminal background candidates’ charts

With first phase witnessing over 64 per cent voter turnout, state of Uttar Pradesh is heading for second phase of state assembly elections 2017, scheduled for February 15th. This time, 721 candidate are in fray for 67 constituencies spread over 11 districts in western UP.  Out of the total number of candidates, at least 256 are multi-millionaires, according to a study by election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The report also analysed the criminal background of the candidates, out of total, 107 have criminal against them, 84 of whom face serious charges like murder, attempt to murder and kidnapping. Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) tops the list with 25 nominees of candidates with criminal backgrounds, followed by the Samajwadi Party with 21 and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 16.

Fifteen constituencies in the second phase have been declared as “Red Alert Constituencies” — the ones which have three or more candidates in fray with declared criminal cases. Along with criminal background, BSP also tops the chart of “crorepati” (multi-millionaire) candidates, with 58 of its nominees possessing wealth in excess of Rs 1 crore. The BJP has fielded 50 such candidates, while the ruling Samajwadi Party has fielded 45 multi-millionaires.

BSP’s Nawab Kazim Ali Khan, contesting from Rampur’s Suar constituency, is the richest of candidate with declared assets in excess of Rs 97 crore. The average assets of candidates for BSP in second phase is Rs 7.20 crore, followed by the BJP candidates with Rs 4.07 crore, the Samajwadi Party with Rs 3.43 crore and the Congress with Rs 3.37 crore.

BJP’s Datagandj candidate Rajeev Singh, has declared the highest income among all the candidates. Singh’s annual income is in excess of Rs 1.16 crore, along with the declared assets to the tune of Rs 14.45 crore.
