The usual Sunday morning became special for a chaiwalla (tea vendor) in Sonebhadra as Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi reached there for a cup of tea with his cavalcade. Though the Gandhi scion has many times earlier surprised poor people with his visits for food and water, this time, it was a surprising moment for him as well. He met Priyanka there, not his sister but the daughter of the tea seller. The Congress leader took sips of his tea and talked to tea vendor’s family and crowd gathered there. After finishing his tea, Rahul received greetings from everyone present there and also posed for selfies with some.

Sonebhadra is a remote area of Uttar Pradesh and going for voting in the final phase of state elections, which is on March 8. In view of this, the Congress leader was on an election tour of region when he decided to stop over for a cup of tea. It was around 1:30 pm when his cavalcade stopped in front of the tea stall in the Duddhi block headquarters, around 80 kilometers from the district headquarters. According to eyewitnesses, Rahul Gandhi stepped out of his vehicle into the shop pf tea vendor Banarasi and asked for a cup of tea. Banarasi and his wife Manju were pleasantly surprised to have such a visitor. They offered him tea and started interacting with him. Rahul also enquired about the wellbeing of the couple.

Rahul, while taking sips of his tea, asked Banarasi’s daughter what was her name. When the 14-year-old girl replied “Priyanka”, he burst into laughter. “You are my sister,” he told her.

Uttar Pradesh is undergoing assembly elections and March 8 is the final phase of voting in the state. Considering this, Samajawadi Party-Congress alliance and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leaving no stone unterturned to woo the voters. While, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday took out a road show in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi.
