25-year-old Vandana Sharma is an independent candidate from Fatehpur Sikri. While other women her age would have marriage on mind, that is not what Vandana is looking for – what she wants to turn into is an empowered woman and she is clear the road to that goal does not go through a marriage. Amidst constant pressure from her family to get married, she decided to do something on her own! She rode about 40 km from her village on her scooty to the district headquarters to file her nomination as an independent candidate, the Asian Age reported. Though Vandana is sure about the result and is well aware that she is contesting against money and muscle power, she is doing all this because she wants to make a point. Sharma, who is pursuing graduation from Agra College, is a determined woman who says that she wants to do something on her own before getting married. Her family pressure was increasing and so she thought that maybe contesting elections could make them realise that she wants to do something on her own.

Although her family initially disapproved of her decision and her father who is a farmer, declined to talk about his daughter’s initiative, is now being supported by her brother Sushil, who has also joined her campaign. Vandana is touring the constituency on her scooty and her focus is on women voters. She says that her own village has no basic amenities and girls there are not expected to step out of their homes without a male member accompanying them. She complained that people talk of development but no one works for the empowerment of women. For her initiative, she said that she is getting a good response from women and the youth.
