UP elections 2017: Rahul Gandhi targets PM Narendra Modi’s pet scheme, asks ‘Has India become clean?’

UP elections 2017: Addressing an election rally in Aligarh on the last day of the first phase of polls in Uttar Pradesh, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi continued to attack PM Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Vice-President targetted the NDA government’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ saying, “Pure desh ke haath mein jhaadu pakda diya, lo tum safai karo. Kya ho gaya Bharat saaf? Ho gaya Swachh Bharat?” (The ruling party forced the entire nation to take up broom urging them to keep India clean. But has India become clean?)

In a bid to win elections in the hilly state of Uttarakhand and politics hot-bed Uttar Pradesh, the Congress Vice-President has addressed many rallies in these poll bound states. Apart from the rally in Aligarh, Gandhi will also address one in Almora and Sitarganj on Thursday. At a rally in Muradnagar on Wednesday, Gandhi accused PM Narendra Modi of befooling the people of India by making fake promises and launching schemes.

Rahul Gandhi in his previous rallies has targeted the Prime Minister on ‘black money’ issue saying that the PM has made fake promises on bringing back black money and crediting Rs.15 lakh in account of every Indian. In a statement to Indian Express, he said, “Did Prime Minister Narendra Modi get the black money back? Has anyone got the 15 lakh Rupees as was promised by the Prime Minister?”

In lead-up to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the Congress had recently joined hands with the ruling Samajwadi Party. Since coalation, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi have addressed several rallies together under one platform. It is expected that the SP-Congress coalition will be a threat to BJP and BSP.
