UP elections 2017: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is fighting both the anti-incumbency factor as well as a muscle-flexing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under an increasingly aggressive President Amit Shah who has dusted out a number of issues in the lead up to polling that includes the Ram temple at Ayodhya as well as hitting out at at the Samajwadi Party for playing communal (appeasement) politics through its pandering to ‘vote banks’. The star BJP campaigner, PM Narendra Modi has used the development card to the full and held up his economic achievements record to indicate that only he can raise the state’s economy to a higher plane in a dispassionate manner that will cater to the interest of all sections of society, especially the poor and the farmers, rather than focusing on a few. However, Akhilesh Yadav, who is freshly off a triumph that he successfully engineered to upstage his uncle Shivpal Yadav, who was angling for a top role in the party to provide tickets to only his supporters, has also gone on the attack mode and is promising not only a more prosperous future for the poor in the state, but also that he will increase the tempo at which the infrastructure is being created in the state. He has also inked a poll tie-up with Rahul Gandhi led Congress and expects that this will ensure that their supporters vote in a unified manner. Also, he has ensured, after his party almost split, to get his father and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to campaign for him, indicating that there is no divergence of opinion in the party. Speaking at a rally today, here is what Akhilesh Yadav said:

1) Replying Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Kaarnama Jibe

“He (PM) says the SP did a lot of “karnama” (misdeeds). He says ‘man ki baat’ on TV and radio, I want to ask him as to when will he do ‘kaam ki baat’ (talk of something worthwhile),” Yadav said at an election rally here.

2)  On Budaun Rape case:

Referring to the infamous Budaun rape case of two sisters, Akhilesh said leaders of all parties reached there and the matter was even raised in the UN, but a CBI probe gave a clean chit to the state and “the conspiracy to defame” was exposed.

3) On Alliance with Congress

“We could have got majority alone, but after alliance with Congress we will comfortably win over 300 seats,” Akhilesh said, asking people to vote for party candidates.

4) On Achche Din slogan

“The downfall of those who had befooled people promising ‘acchey din’ has started.

5) On current and 2019 general elections

After 2017, they will be wiped out in 2019 also. They (BJP) should tell as to what have they done for people,” he added.
