Despite a direct poll alliance between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, the candidates of the two parties are contesting against each other in the district's two assembly segments - Amethi and Gaurigan.
Star Congress campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will not join party vice-president and her brother Rahul Gandhi for a rally scheduled to take place on Thursday. The office of Priyanka Gandhi confirmed the development, Times Now reported. Quoting sources, PTI had reported that Priyanka may accompany Rahul during the rallies in Amethi, where Congress is locking horns with ally Samajwadi Party. Party’s local spokesperson Anil Singh said Rahul is scheduled to address public meetings at Gauriganj, Jagdishpur (reserved) and Amethi assembly segments. Despite a direct poll alliance between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, the candidates of the two parties are contesting against each other in the district’s two assembly segments – Amethi and Gaurigan.
In Amethi, Congress candidate Ameeta Singh is taking on controversial state minister Gayatri Prajapati, who managed to bag a ticket from Samajwadi Party, despite differences with chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and charges of alleged role in the rape of a woman. In Gauriganj assembly segment, Congress nominee Mohammed Naeem is running the poll against sitting Samajwadi Party MLA Rakesh Pratap Singh.

Meanwhile, Amethi is to witness on Wednesday the election campaign rallies by another high-profile Congress leader and former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin in favour of the party candidates. The Thursday rallies will be a part of 5th phase campaigning. While campaigning for 4th phase had concluded on Tuesday. Earlier, sharing the stage with Rahul, Priyanka had raked up the ‘outsider’ status of PM Narendra Modi.
“UP doesn’t need a leader from outside. All youth of the state can lead UP, build a new UP.” Commenting on PM Modi’s promises to women of the state, Priyanka said, “I am a woman…Who has committed the most number of atrocities against women, poor. Wasn’t making you stand in queues atrocities against women.” Priyanka attended the rally two-day days after BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani claimed the Congress leader was not campaigning as she had no answers to people’s question in Uttar Pradesh.
