In poll-bound UP, a look at the Baahubali scions in fray

At least half dozen candidates, whose parents have been known for their criminal backgrounds, are contesting elections this time.

Uttar Pradesh has been a turf driven by strongmen in politics. As the state heads for polls for 17th time, an entire new generation of Bahubali scions is in fray. At least half dozen candidates, whose parents have been known for their criminal backgrounds, are contesting elections this time. While most of the new-gen contestants don’t have cases against them, their Baahubali parents have serious charges framed against them. Here’s a look at some of the Bahubali sons and daughters contesting Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017:

Dinesh Kant Yadav(RLD): Dinesh Kant Yadav, Rashtriya Lok Dal candidate contesting from Shahganj seat, is the son of strongman Uma Kant Yadav. Yadav senior has a total of 20 cases registered against him, including 2 cases of murder and 2 of fraud.

Arun Yadav (BJP): Arun Yadav is BJP’s candidate for Phulpur Pawai seat. He is the son of Member of Parliament Ramakant Yadav. In the year 2009, Ramakant Yadav had a whopping 36 cases registered against him. However, in 2014, when he fought the elections again, the number of cases reduced drastically to five. The 36-year-old Arun fought and won Assembly elections for first-time in 2007 on a SP ticket. Later, he left the party and joined BJP.

Vinay Tiwary (BSP): BSP’s Chillapur candidate Vinay Tiwary is the son of noted strongman Harishankar Tiwary. Vinay’s father Harishankar was first in India to win an election while serving a jail-term. He also has a considerable base among UP’s Brahmin community.

Suraj Singh (Samajwadi Party): 32-year-old Suraj is nephew of strongman Vinod Kumar (popularly known as Pandit Singh). Suraj is active in politics for the past 10 years. Suraj’s uncle Pandit Singh is accused of once kidnapping a Chief Miniter Official.

Neelam Karvariya: BJP’s candidate from Meza seat, Neelam Karvariya is the wife of notorious strongman Udaybhan Karvariya, currently serving a jail-term. Neelam has to fight elections for her husband as the latter is in jail.
