The Bhartiya Janata Party in an attempt to reach every single voter in Uttar Pradesh for the assembly elections has printed over 3 crores “voter slips” and plans to distribute them to each household so that all the 14.12 voters get covered. Although such practices are quite common before an election, the BJP seems have taken the exercise to a whole different level trying to reach every voter in the state. According to reports by IE, the voter slips have been printed as the size of a postcard with the voter’s name, age and serial number in the electoral poll.

The party’s document comes in the form of a pamphlet, which along with the details of each voter carries the BJP’s most significant agendas from the election manifesto. The reason for this, party sources say, is because it would be impossible to provide each voting family with the 25-page manifesto of the BJP. According to these sources, such slips are on of the ways of helping the candidates and connecting directly with the respected voters.

Each slip has been carefully addressed to one member of a chosen family. It contains the house number on the top along with BJP’s appeal to vote to free Uttar Pradesh of Goonda Raj and corruption. The slips contain photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Kalraj Mishra and Uma Bharti and state BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya, beneath which the details of the voter, voting schedule and the candidates have been mentioned. On the back side of the slip, the promises made in the manifesto, which include farm loan waiver, free laptop with 1 GB data, ban on slaughterhouses, free education for girls, LPG connections to poor and the creation of Anti-Romeo squad to help protect girls have been highlighted. J P S Rathore, state Vice President of the BJP, who is also in charge of the poll management said that the party workers would ensure the brief summary of the manifesto reached every household in the state through these voter slips. One of the BJP leaders told IE that the idea of using bigger slips came after they realised that the earlier methods of smaller voter slips were inadequate and the party used to distribute them without checking if the voter’s name was available with the poll staff in the booth.
