Earlier, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had campaigned for Gayatri, but refrained from sharing stage or making any direct comment with regards to the tainted leader.
Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav will be campaigning for controversial MLA Gayatri Prajapati, who is contesting from Amrthi’s Gauriganj seat. Earlier, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had campaigned for Gayatri, but refrained from sharing stage or making any direct comments with regards to the tainted leader. The minister is currently facing charges of rape and sexual harassment. Prajapati also find a mention in PM Narendra Modi’s speech, after he was booked for rape and sexual harassment after intervention from the Supreme Court. The apex court also ordered a status of investigation in the cases. The Uttar Pradesh police has been given eight weeks time for the same. As per earlier reports, a 35-year-old woman had complained against Prajapati alleging that the leader has raped her for the past two years. The lady had further alleged Prajapati of taking obscene photos, and threatening to make them public. No FIR was filed in the matter for a very long time, prompting apex court ordered the FIR against Prajapati. Prajapati said that this was a BJP conspiracy against him and the truth will come out soon. But said that he respects SC’s decision.
SP minister Prajapati has multiple cases registered against him. In the past Prajapati was under Lokyukta scanner for the alleged misuse of his position to amass assets worth crores. Prajapati also formed the initial fulcrum of tussle between CM Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav. The minister, considered close to Shivpal, was sacked twice by Akhilesh in three months.

Recently, Prajapati was censured by Election Commission in another case for violation of the model code of conduct under a rule which prohibits ‘corrupt practices’ and ‘bribing of voters’. The EC in January 2017, also asked why should Prajapati not be booked for an FIR filed against him in Fatehpur police station for a consignment containing 4,452 sarees being seized, for which Prajapati was the receiver. The driver alleged that the sarees were to be delivered to Gayatri Prajapati so as to distribute among the voters in Amethi.
