Sunny Deol joins BJP, says India needs a leader like Narendra Modi

Sunny Deol joins BJP! Ending days of speculations, Bollywood star Sunny Deol joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday.  Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal welcomed Sunny Deol into the BJP at party headquarters in New Delhi. Soon after Sunny Deol’s joining, the BJP announced his name as party candidate from Gurdaspur seat in Punjab for Lok Sabha election.

Speaking to reporters, Sunny Deol showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and recalled his family’s association with the BJP. “India needs a leader like him (Narendra Modi) and I want him to continue as country’s PM,” he said.

“The way my Papa worked with and supported Atal ji, I am here today to work with and support Modi ji. My work will do the talking,” Sunnt Deol said.

Earlier, reports claimed that the BJP is contemplating to give ticket to Sunny Deol from Amritsar seat from where Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had unsuccessfully contested in 2004. Jaitley was defeated by present Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh by a margin of over a lakh votes.

Sunny Deol, who is remembered for his stellar performances in movies Ghayal, Border and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, is the third person from his family to join politics and the BJP. His father Dharmendra had won 2004 Lok Sabha election from Bikaner seat in Rajasthan. Hema Malini, Dharmendra’s second wife, is seeking a second term from Mathura constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Voting in Mathura was held in the first phase of Lok Sabha election 2019 on April 11.

Voting on all 13 parliamentary constituencies in Punjab is scheduled to be held in the last of the seven-phased elections on May 19. Counting of votes will be done on May 23.

On the professional front, Sunny Deol is currently shooting for debutant director Behzad Khambata’s action-thriller ‘Blank’.
