Sunny Deol to contest Lok Sabha election? A brief meeting between Bollywood star Sunny Deol and Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah has triggered speculations about the actor joining politics. Deol and Shah met for about five minutes at the Pune airport lounge on Friday evening.
While the BJP is yet to announce candidate for three Lok Sabha constituencies, some media reports said that Sunny Deol could be the saffron party’s candidate from Amritsar. However, other reports suggested that he could be fielded from Gurdaspur. The BJP had fielded Arun Jaitley from Amritsar in 2014 Lok Sabha but he was defeated by veteran Congress leader and present Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh by a margin of over a lakh votes.
Neither Sunny Deol nor the BJP has confirmed anything so far. Sunny Deol, who is know for his hard hitting performances in movies Ghayal, Border and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, will be the third from his family to join politics if he decided to take a plunge. Name of another actor Poonam Dhillon, who was appointed as BJP Mumbai unit’s vice president in 2018, is also doing the rounds for Amritsar seat. The BJP is contemplating to give ticket to Vinod Khanna’s wife Kavita or his son Akshaye from Gurdaspur, sources said.
Sunny’s father veteran actor Dharmendra had contested election on BJP ticket from Rajasthan’s Bikaner in 2004 and won. Dharmendra’s second wife Hema Malini is sitting BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura and is seeking a second term. Dharmendra was in Mathura last week to campaign for Hema Malini.
On the professional front, Sunny Deol, 62, is currently shooting for debutant director Behzad Khambata’s action-thriller ‘Blank’.
Voting on all 13 parliamentary constituencies in Punjab is scheduled to be held in the last of the seven-phased elections on May 19. Counting of votes will be done on May 23.
